Book Review: Unf*ck Your Habitat by: Rachel Hoffman

Rachel Hoffman’s motivation is definitely contagious! Her book, Unf*ck Your Habitat is a comedic look at how we can actually make our lives much better in simple, easy ways!

Judging by the popularity of the Unf*ck Your Habitat movement, I seem to be a little late to the party! Having only just discovered this book in all its glory, I’m proud to say that it has guided me to a completely different way of thinking about chores around the home: I now try to make it fun, or as fun as it realistically could be!

When I first got stuck into this book, I found the author’s style to be captivating in the sense that it was more conversational rather than informative. It was a casual, chatty and fun read. Considering the subject matter of this book, this sense of dialogue is a perfect fit: it draws the reader into a friendly discussion rather than having information and instructions blasted at you.

The style of writing was not only conversational but the author herself seemed understanding of your situation and needs, enthusiastic, welcoming and most definitely motivating!

Being completely new to the concept of ‘Unf*cking’ one’s Habitat, what I found truly interesting was the fact that it is all common sense: wash your dishes, fix your bed, clean the loo…. Well, why wouldn’t we do these things?! Thinking these thoughts, I put the bool down, saying to myself ‘I don’t think I need help in the cleaning department, thank you very much!” BUT… As I sat there with my Kindle on my lap, I thought about it some more and said to myself ‘Well hang on there, do I actually do all of these things?” NO. I don’t.

In fact, I do all the ‘no-nos’ presented in the book: I binge clean once a week after a 6 day working week, leaving me exhausted on my single day off. I open packages after buying pretty things and then I proceed to just leave the wrapping on the table for someone else, just anyone else to clean up. I do everything that Unf*ck Your Habitat tells you NOT to do. The guilt that set in after I had this revelation, let me tell you….

When I got home that night, after finishing this lovely book off during my revelation of a lunch break at work, I am very proud to say that I went grocery shopping, cooked a meal, cleaned the prep dishes while our dinner was in the oven. I emptied all the bins in the house and replaced the liner. I got rid of our ‘floor wardrobe’ and actually put things where they belong. I finally got those clothes out of the dryer. Then I got really crazy and actually put away all my books that were crowding the coffee table. I still had hours left over to sit around, relax and enjoy a lovely evening in with my husband.

As advised in the book: a little bit every day certainly does go a hell of a long way!

I would definitely give this book 5 stars; it is well thought out, motivating and really did make me laugh! A highly recommended read, available now from Dymocks – Click here to order your copy!

Thank you to the author for allowing me an advanced copy of her amazing book in exchange for an honest review.
